Pentecost Chapel
[Start by asking students questions based off last week's chapel]
What is Pentecost? (Coming of the Holy Spirit)
Why does it matter? (We have God's Spirit living inside of us)
What does that make you? (God's Temple)
Before you can answer any other questions about the world around you and how you are supposed to interact with it, you must settle one thing. Who are you? What is your identity? What's the most important thing about you?
If you don't answer this question, then all of your relationships are stunted. All of your friendships become about you and finding yourself or about how others make you feel. Life becomes warped by the giant self-centered sucking sound of your life.
There was an article in TIME magazine this last week about your generation. The article threw around a word called narcissism quite a bit. [SLIDE] It happens when someone begins to think that life is about them. It happens when we think our family or our friends are there to meet our needs and make us look good. It happens when we think God is like a vending machine there to grant our every desire.
The world is constantly telling you who you are. But they don't care about you. They want you to buy something from them. Your family is constantly telling you who you are, and depending on your family, they may also be lying to you. They may want you to feel good about yourself but may go about it in the wrong way. [SLIDE] Being one out of a million means that there are 6,400 people on this planet just like you.
Rick Warren wrote a little book that had a tiny bit of success in the last several years called "The Purpose Driven Life". Your parents have heard of it. The book starts with one of the most profound lessons in living a rich full life: it's not about you.
You're value in this life is not about how you can set yourself apart. You don't need to be a sports hero, or a rock star, or a senator, or the smartest person in your class. You're value in this life doesn't depend on you at all. It's not about you. You're valuable because you're loved. God loves you. God in the flesh died to ransom for himself. All the other labels we apply to ourselves are peripheral at best. We spend our lives giving each other gold stars and gray dots but miss the larger picture. My evaluation of you doesn't matter. God says he loves you. That trumps everything else.
Who are you? If you believe in Jesus as your savior and declare him to be Lord over your life, you have the Holy Spirit living inside of you. The Holy One who created the universe calls you his child and his friend. All of a sudden the number of likes I get on my Facebook post doesn't seem to factor into how my day is going.
Neil Anderson of Freedom in Christ ministries compiled a list of statements of who we are in Christ. I'm going to start looping them. As they come on the screen, I want you to think about how you define yourself. What lie do you believe about yourself? Do you think you’re not important? You are God's child. Do you carry guilt and shame around with you like some horrible backpack? You are free from condemnation and have been redeemed and forgiven of all your sins. The Holy Spirit at Pentecost and the Holy Spirit inside of us is a down payment that God is going to do what he said. He is a God who keeps his promises. He's the only one who keeps his promises. He will complete the good work he is doing in your life. He hasn't forgotten about you. You're not alone. Hear me. You're not alone. You matter... but not because your YouTube video has over 100,000 hits. The One who made everything knows your name and calls you friend

On the floor in front on me I have paper and markers. Today, name the lie the lie in your life. Kill it. Destroy its power over you with the truth of who you are in Christ. It's a lie that I'm not good at anything; I am God's workmanship. It's a lie that I don't belong; I am a citizen of heaven. Afterwards we'll hang it on the walls to remind ourselves of God's promises to us; we'll remind ourselves of who we are in Christ.
