Who Is God for You Chapel

Who is God for you? Right now, at this point in your life, how is he revealing himself to you? As a community we’ve begun this journey towards sharing life together: sharing our hearts and our faith. To even begin to have the discussion with each other, we first have to have the discussion with ourselves. Who is God for you? What is he doing in your life? What does God want to be for you right now that He couldn’t be at any other time, in any other way? “What is it about your current situation that is designed to bring you into a deeper relationship with God? Every circumstance in life is about that—difficulty and blessing. If you’re being severely challenged right now, God wants to be something for you. If you’re walking in incredible favor and transformation, He’s showing you His nature in that, as well” (Cooke, Nature of God p22).
If your not sure, listen to your heart. Close your eyes. What is your spirit sighing for? Once you understand that, you will understand what God wants to be for you. “Your heart for Him is simply a reflection of His heart for you; God has us longing for the things He most wants to give us.” (Cooke, Nature of God p23)
Often, we find our emotions changing from day to day and even moment to moment. Our affections for each other and for God are so fragile. But God isn’t like that. His nature is consistent. “The Father will never change his heart toward you” (Cooke, Nature of God p8). Like the Father in the parable of the prodigal son, He is always inviting you in. That’s what he’s like. We always know where we are with God because He never changes (Cooke, Beholding and Becoming p38). He is always loving. He is always kind. He is always compassionate. He cannot be any other way.
Today is our first step in vocalizing our faith walk. Once you begin to answer this question, I want you to grab a marker or a crayon and write or draw on the side wall who God is for you.
[As a school, we kept the paper on the wall for several months.]
“Confidence in God comes when we understand two things: who He is, and who we are.” (Cooke, Nature of God p43)
If we want to progress in our relationship with the Lord, then we have to know what it is He wants to teach us. The Father is completely intentional in our lives.
“What you think about the most is what you love the most” (25).
“When God is cemented at the fore of our hearts, we see our relationship with Him deepen in ways we never thought possible.” (25).
Possibly read page 38 and 39 of “The Nature of God”.

“The name of the Lord is our strong tower and refuge, and we have to discipline ourselves to live there, and not in our issues.” (31)
